Have you heard…
…about The Crimson Confession?
It began with a disappearance.
An entire batch of white chocolate and cranberry cookies, intended for afternoon service, vanished before a single one reached the drawing room.
There were enquiries.
The following week, it happened again.
This time, particular attention was paid to a gentleman who had been remarkably vocal on the subject. He found the whole fuss excessive, he said. White chocolate was too sweet. Cranberries had no business in a proper cookie. And he certainly couldn’t understand why anyone was making such a spectacle over them.
Then a third batch disappeared.
But on this occasion, the culprit had been careless.
A trail of crumbs led rather inconveniently from the kitchen, along the corridor and directly to his usual chair — where a fragment of jewel-bright cranberry remained caught rather damningly on his cuff.
There was really very little left to discuss.
Cornered at last, the gentleman made what has since become one of the House’s more memorable admissions.
He had taken all three batches.
The jewel-bright cranberries, he conceded, cut rather beautifully through the creamy white chocolate. The sweetness was perfectly restrained. And he had, regrettably, developed something of a weakness for them.
There was a brief silence.
One of the assembled members regarded him for a moment before asking whether twelve cookies constituted a weakness or a complete collapse of character.
He declined to answer.
And thus ended The Crimson Confession.
The cookies, incidentally, are no longer left unattended.
