HAVE YOU HEARD…

…about The Brownstone Baron?

Word has it that the Baron is a gentleman of considerable substance. A traditionalist by reputation, he’s never been one for frivolity, preferring good character and a little depth to anything unnecessarily extravagant.

But there have been whispers about what goes on behind those respectable doors.

Apparently, his fondness for whole wheat, dark treacle and a discreet touch of cocoa has produced something rather unexpected. Rich, earthy and just a little indulgent, though nowhere near as sweet as some might imagine.

Naturally, the Baron considers the attention entirely unnecessary.

The Brownstone Baron. A gentleman with more depth than he lets on.

The Brownstone Baron is a gentleman of traditional tastes and considerable substance. His dark, hearty crumb, enriched with whole wheat, black treacle and a discreet touch of cocoa, lends itself to robust flavours and simple pleasures. Lightly toasted and generously buttered, he requires little further introduction.

At breakfast, he is particularly agreeable beneath softly scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, or a generous spoonful of marmalade, whose citrus brightness provides a pleasing contrast to his earthy depths. Come lunchtime, he favours mature cheddar with a sharp chutney, or thick slices of roast beef accompanied by horseradish. A steaming bowl of mushroom soup is equally welcome company.

By evening, the Baron takes his place confidently alongside slow-cooked beef stews, hearty casseroles and rich vegetable soups. At the cheeseboard, he is especially fond of aged Gouda, mature Stilton and a creamy Brie, each bringing something rather agreeable to his dark, malty character.

To drink, he appreciates a robust breakfast tea, a freshly brewed coffee, or, when the occasion warrants, a glass of ruby port.

A gentleman of enduring tastes and few unnecessary flourishes, The Brownstone Baron proves that true substance never goes out of style.

The Brownstone Baron is best enjoyed fresh within 24–48 hours of his arrival – his crust proud, his crumb lively. To keep him in fine form, rest him cut-side down upon a board or wrap him in paper; never plastic, for it dulls both spirit and crust alike.

Should the days run on, he remains ever-dependable: warm him gently at 170°C for 6–8 minutes to revive his noble character. For longer keeping, slice before freezing – he thaws gracefully, ready to toast and serve as if newly baked.

Avoid refrigeration; it tempers his tang and lessens his charm.
